- Customer / Industry
The TRIATHLON customer operates a Gozzard 41 sailboat with cutter rigging (i.e., single-masted, with the mainsail guided). The Endeavour has a length of 41 feet (about 12.5 meters) on deck and a beam of 14 feet (about 4 meters).
- Special Challenge
As a rule, TRIATHLON batteries provide traction for industrial trucks. But this order was different – and came as a surprise. The customer was looking for a new battery for the on-board power supply of his sailing vessel. The brief was clear: squeeze as many ampere-hours as possible into the available battery space. From the air conditioning to the interior lighting and the navigation lights to the electric windlass and the hydraulic drive for the autopilot – a multitude of consumers must be supplied from the battery box. A 3000 watt inverter establishes a 120 volt system that serves to run a coffee maker, toaster, two on-board computers and as a power source for charging a tablet and smartphones, among other things.
- Solution
Triathlon Batteries USA’s extensive agent network was able to provide the customer with a working solution in a very short time. Two 12 V battery blocks based on lead-acid cells ensure the basic functions of the sailing yacht. Battery charging is accomplished via the inverter when the Endeavour is connected to shore power (120 V connection at 30 amps), or via the onboard generator. A 150 amp three-phase alternator charges the battery when the main engine is running. The ship thus has a reliable and powerful battery that also requires significantly less maintenance than its predecessor. Despite challenging on-board systems and a large length of cable extending from the battery, a discharge of 750 to 800 Ah can still provide approx. 11.5 volts can be used.
After the customer’s wishes were intensively recorded and analyzed, the TRIATHLON Key Account Manager activated his network and thus enabled the rapid delivery of the solution. After the initial contact in July 2022, the battery was installed a few weeks later in September. The project was led by battery experts at Triathlon Battery Solutions, Inc. . From the Dallas location, the team serves customers in North and South America. In addition to lead-acid batteries, the product portfolio also includes integrated solutions consisting of lithium-ion battery systems, chargers and energy management concepts.
